In plain terms: TrendShield exists to help safeguarding professionals protect children from online harm. We do this by monitoring publicly available information — not by surveilling children, families or communities. Privacy, transparency and professional accountability are foundational to everything we do.
1. Our purpose
TrendShield was built with a single purpose: to help Designated Safeguarding Leads, school staff and safeguarding professionals identify and respond to online risks to young people more quickly and effectively.
We recognise that safeguarding tools have the potential to cause harm if designed or operated irresponsibly. Surveillance technology in education can undermine the trust between young people and the institutions that are supposed to protect them. We are committed to a different approach — one grounded in intelligence, not surveillance.
This ethics statement sets out the principles that govern how TrendShield operates. It is a living document, revised as our platform and the broader landscape of online risk evolves.
2. Public-source intelligence only
TrendShield identifies online risks by monitoring what is already publicly available — the same content anyone with an internet connection could find. We do not use special access, covert methods, or any technology that goes beyond what is publicly visible.
We do monitor
- Publicly accessible posts and videos on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and similar platforms
- Publicly indexed web pages and news content
- Public trending topics and search signals via approved platform APIs
- Publicly visible hashtags, challenges and emerging content patterns
We do not monitor
- Private social media accounts or restricted content
- Direct messages, private group chats or closed communities
- Specific named individuals or students
- School networks, devices, or internal systems
- Anything requiring special access, authentication, or deceptive methods
Our view is that monitoring publicly available information to protect young people from known harms is both ethically proportionate and legally sound. We will not expand beyond this boundary without a thorough ethical review and clear statement of purpose.
3. No private content monitoring
TrendShield is not, and will never be, a surveillance platform. We do not monitor the behaviour of individual children, young people, families or communities.
We monitor trends — patterns of behaviour visible across public content at a population level. Our goal is to give safeguarding professionals advance knowledge of risks that may affect their students, not to surveil those students.
We will not build surveillance features
We will not build features that allow schools to monitor the social media accounts, private messages, or online activity of individual students — even if requested. We believe such monitoring is disproportionate, damages the trust relationship between young people and schools, and may cause more harm than it prevents.
If your organisation is looking for a product that monitors individual students' devices or accounts, TrendShield is not the right solution. We recommend reviewing guidance from the UK Safer Internet Centre and Ofsted on proportionate approaches to online safety.
4. Privacy-first approach
We believe privacy is a right — not an obstacle to overcome in pursuit of safety. A privacy-first approach means we design every part of TrendShield to minimise data collection, maximise transparency, and give users meaningful control.
Data minimisation
We collect only the personal data genuinely necessary to provide our service. We do not collect data "in case it might be useful" — if we don't need it, we don't collect it.
Transparency
We publish detailed documentation of what data we collect, how it is processed, what AI does with it, and who we share it with. We aim to be one of the most transparent platforms in the edtech safeguarding space.
User rights
Every TrendShield user has the right to access, correct, and delete their personal data. We will honour these rights promptly and without unnecessary barriers.
5. Safeguarding purpose
Every feature in TrendShield is built around a single question: does this help safeguarding professionals protect young people? We do not build features for general surveillance, commercial intelligence, law enforcement, or any purpose outside of educational safeguarding.
We are explicit about what TrendShield is, and is not:
- TrendShield is an intelligence tool for safeguarding professionals in schools and education settings
- TrendShield is not a surveillance product, a parental control system, or a law enforcement tool
- TrendShield is a supplement to professional safeguarding practice
- TrendShield is not a replacement for professional safeguarding judgement, training, or statutory guidance
We work alongside — and in full respect of — the safeguarding frameworks set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and relevant statutory guidance from the Department for Education.
6. Responsible AI principles
TrendShield uses AI to help process large volumes of public information and produce readable intelligence for safeguarding professionals. Our responsible AI principles are:
Human control
AI assists — it does not decide. All significant AI outputs go through human review before reaching schools. Human reviewers can override any AI classification. Safeguarding decisions must always be made by qualified professionals, not algorithms.
Transparency about limitations
We are honest about what AI can and cannot do. AI systems make errors — false positives, false negatives, cultural blind spots. We document these limitations in our AI Transparency Notice and build our platform to reduce their impact.
No harmful use
AI in TrendShield is used exclusively to identify risks to young people in publicly available content. We will not use AI to identify, profile or target individuals, to support law enforcement surveillance, or for any purpose that is not aligned with educational safeguarding.
Continuous improvement
We commit to monitoring AI performance, acting on feedback from safeguarding professionals, and regularly reviewing whether our AI systems are operating in alignment with our ethics principles.
7. Children's rights
TrendShield is built to protect children — and we believe that protecting children includes protecting their rights. We are guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UK's commitment to children's rights in the digital age.
Relevant principles that shape our approach:
- Right to privacy (Article 16 UNCRC): Children have a right to privacy. Our public-source-only approach and our refusal to monitor private communications reflects this principle.
- Right to protection from harm (Articles 19, 34 UNCRC): Children have a right to be protected from exploitation and harm. This is the primary purpose of TrendShield.
- Right to be heard (Article 12 UNCRC): We seek input from safeguarding professionals who work directly with young people to ensure our platform reflects the real-world experience of children in schools.
We do not collect personal data about children. We do not build profiles of children. We do not enable schools to monitor children beyond what is permitted by their own data protection policies and relevant safeguarding law.
8. Accountability
We are accountable for the ethics of TrendShield — both in how we build it and how it is used.
- This ethics statement is a public commitment. If we fall short of it, we expect to be held accountable.
- We will conduct periodic reviews of our ethics practices — at least annually — and update this statement to reflect any changes.
- We welcome challenge and scrutiny from schools, safeguarding professionals, and civil society organisations.
- We are committed to engaging with sector bodies, including the UK Safer Internet Centre, the NSPCC, and local safeguarding partnerships, to ensure our approach reflects current best practice.

9. Our commitments — a summary
Public-source monitoring only
We will never access private content, accounts or communications.

TrendShield intelligence is for educational safeguarding. We will not sell or repurpose it for law enforcement, advertising or other uses.
Human oversight of AI
AI assists but does not decide. Human review is mandatory before intelligence reaches schools.
Transparency
We publish full documentation of our data practices, AI systems and ethics commitments.
UK-based & GDPR compliant
All data held and processed in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
No children's personal data
We do not collect, hold or process personal data about children or students.
Accountable to schools
We welcome challenge, feedback and scrutiny. Schools can hold us to the commitments in this statement.
